Return to School in September
In order to provide a safe and secure learning environment for its students, Alexander Academy will adhere to the following guidelines.
The information below may change depending on updated Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health information scheduled to be released in late August.
School Administration will carefully monitor these information sources to keep parents, custodians, agents and students well informed.
School-Wide Protocols
- Daily arrival wellness check-in/temperature check for students and staff
- Self-assessment training for students via BCThrive Health tool
- Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the school
- Hand sanitizing station will be available at the entrance/exit point at the school
- Disinfectant wipes will be available in each classroom and at all common areas
- High touch areas will be cleaned twice daily by on-site full-time cleaning personnel
- The school will undergo a deep cleaning at the end of each school day
- Additional classroom/activity space (40,000 square feet) will be made available at Alexander College to ensure sufficient spacing for students and activities
- Some desks and unnecessary furniture will be removed from classrooms and common areas to provide additional safe working space for students
- Signs will appear throughout the school to remind everyone to keep their distance, to wash hands frequently, to avoid touching their face, to sneeze into their arm
- Foot traffic throughout the school will be controlled by floor signs
- Break and lunch times will be staggered to minimize large groups
- Sharing of any school supplies or food will be discouraged
- Washroom access will be limited to 2 students at a time
- Daily communication with families, homestay, and custodians regarding student attendance and absences
- Only pre-approved visitors and essential personnel will be allowed in the school
Class Size
- The Academy has an average pupil teacher ratio of 7:1
- Class size will be limited to 18
Personal Protection
- Students are required to wear either masks or face shields in the common areas, both of which will be made available.
- BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) & Worksafe BC guidance for K-12 school settings is that personal protective equipment, such as masks and gloves are not needed, beyond those used by staff as part of regular precautions for the hazards normally encountered in their regular course of work.
Arriving and Leaving School
- Thermal scanners will be used school entrance
- Anyone showing signs of an increased temperature will be asked to contact their guardian/parent/custodian and go home
- Physical distancing markers will be placed at the entrance to the school
Washrooms
- Occupancy limited to 2 students whenever possible
- Students will be reminded daily to wash hands before and after using the washroom
Recess and Lunch Breaks
- Lunch and break times will be staggered
- Staff will monitor movement throughout the school continuously to ensure student safety
- Students are encouraged to bring lunch and snacks from home in personal containers and take all containers and the contents home
Gym/Fitness Center
- Whenever possible, physical education activities will take place outdoors
- Small class sizes will allow for social distancing
- Activities that allow social distancing will be encouraged
- Students will be required to wear non-medical masks while participating in physical activities
Elevators
- Enhance cleaning of the elevator daily
- Occupancy limited to 2 persons
- Students are not permitted to use the elevator
Health and Safety
- Staff assigned to First Aid response will be required to wear N95 masks, face shields, and surgical gloves when dealing with student or staff medical issues
- Students can access the school counselor by appointment
- Keep.meSAFE is a program that provides 24 free access to mental health support via the MySSP app. Access is available in over 30 languages and students are able to call or chat with a counsellor directly from their phone
