High School Chemistry and Biology Teacher

Alexander Academy is an independent co-educational high school located in downtown Vancouver. We offer the British Columbia (BC) high school graduation program in a culturally rich and academically challenging environment for students in grade 10-12. Alexander Academy is committed to international mindedness and fostering a sense of global citizenship while creating a safe and rich learning environment for all students. We are looking for an experienced BC-certified Chemistry and Biology high school teacher for a full-time role starting September 2024.

Position Overview:
This role will be responsible for teaching chemistry, biology, and other high school science classes depending on qualifications and experience in the BC curriculum. Reporting to the Head of School, the appointed person will be an experienced, innovative, and passionate educator who differentiates instruction to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching the BC high school curriculum (Dogwood)
  • Ensuring the overall academic standards and assessments within the BC curriculum are maintained at a high standard and that students receive engaging and carefully thought-out educational experiences
  • Fostering and facilitating professional development
  • Ensuring that the courses taught are fully articulated in terms of skills and concepts
  • Provide students with timely and relevant feedback, aligned with high expectations and clear goals, to deepen their learning
  • Formally report on student progress and growth, incorporating self-assessment and peer-assessment practices
  • Be available to students and families outside of class time
  • Use a variety of pedagogical approaches and lesson design
  • Model the school’s values: engagement, empathy, respect, and integrity
  • Participate in extracurricular activities and organizing field trips in the community

Ideally, candidates will have the following experience and skills:

  • Recent experience of teaching in the BC high school system
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application
  • Certified or eligible for certification with the BC Ministry of Education – Teacher Regulation Branch (https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/k-12/teach/become-a-teacher)
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a related curricular area (Chemistry and Biology)
  • Training (TESL certificate or TESL diploma or similar coursework) and/or experience in teaching ELL students is an asset
  • Knowledge of subject matter, curriculum and ministry requirements for teaching Chemistry and Biology for grades 10-12
  • Experience teaching in a technology rich environment
  • Dynamic and energetic individual who wishes to work in a highly focused environment with students keen to succeed
  • Strong classroom management abilities
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with teachers, staff members, students, parents, and outside community agencies and partners
  • Current on pedagogical trends through continued reading and relevant recent professional development
  • Experienced in bringing a diversity of voices and worldviews to classroom material and learning experiences, including Indigenous, local, and global perspectives
  • Maintain professionalism through all school interactions and activities

Starting Teacher Salary:
$51,000 – $64,400 (based on experience)

High School Information Technology (IT) Teacher

Alexander Academy is an independent high school located in downtown Vancouver. We are looking for an experienced BC-certified IT teacher who also has an interest in robotics and 3D printing for a full-time role starting September 2024.

Position Overview:
This role will be responsible for teaching information technology courses, such as Computer Studies, Computer Programming, Digital Media Development, Robotics, and/or other IT classes depending on qualifications and experience in the BC curriculum. Reporting to the Head of School, the appointed person will be an experienced, innovative, and passionate educator who differentiates instruction to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom environment.
